In his second year at OLu, head coach Joe Molina is looking forward to applying the experience and knowledge he gained this summer as the USA Cadet Regional National Team Head Coach, while continuing to grow the program and emphasize relationship building.

"We didn't reach the goal that we wanted last season…but we did see a lot of personal and physical growth in all of our athletes, which was huge," says Molina.

This year the program will feature 21 athletes across the varsity and JV teams, including 12 freshmen on the rosters. OLu alum Anderson Prior '25 returns this year to assist in coaching the newcomers.

Although the Lancers are a young team, they will be led by a group of experienced players, including senior Logan Hetland, who will serve as captain, and junior Cooper Chastain.

"They've done a really good job of keeping the young guys excited about being on varsity and making sure they understand the scope of what that means, that it's a special opportunity and you've got to work hard," says Molina of Hetland and Chastain's leadership.

Molina expects a strong offensive season from Chastain, who will start at center this year, along with fellow junior Jackson Stout, who is coming off a successful summer club season.

With a few games already under their belts, the Lancers will continue nonleague play before opening Trinity League competition on September 24, when OLu hosts Mater Dei.

In addition to league play, the Lancers will test themselves in several tournaments, taking on strong California programs as well as out-of-state opponents. Their schedule includes the Villa Park Classic (September 12), the Don Lugo Tournament (September 26) and the Steve Pal Memorial Tournament (October 17).

With an emphasis on building strong fundamentals, Molina is creating an environment where players are encouraged to learn multiple positions, a move that will provide more opportunities for the athletes to showcase their skills. He is confident that this foundational approach will bring success both in and out of the pool.

"We want to make it into the CIF playoffs and see how far we can go," says Molina. "Ideally, we would love to win a championship, but our goal this year is definitely to keep growing, support our seniors and make sure that everybody else is working hard."
