After finishing second in Trinity League and advancing to the CIF Division 1 State Qualifier Round last season, the Orange Lutheran girls golf team is back and poised to make a deep playoff run.
The Lancers will be led by senior captains and four-year program players
Mason Egdahl and
Audrey Sung, both of whom are varsity returners.
Also returning this year is junior
Jude Lee who advanced as an individual player to the CIF Division 1 State Regional Tournament last fall. Lee has had a strong summer offseason and is ready to lead OLu in pursuit of a league title.
The varsity squad has also gained a number of skilled transfer students, as well as a talented freshman core, including
Madison Ah You,
Sienna Manzo and
Myla Robinson, all of whom will add much needed depth to the roster.
"This year, we're a lot deeper as far as our team is concerned, and that's the thing that is going to take us from being a good team to a great team,"says OLu girls golf head coach
Dustin Boburka.
In addition to league and non-league matches, the Lancers will play in five tournaments against top-level programs from across SoCal's talent-rich field. On September 6, OLu heads out to the desert to play in the Chappy Wheeler Classic, and on September 13, the Lancers will face off against the top teams in CIF Division 1 in the South Bay Invitational.
Boburka and the coaching staff see a level of talent and a mental toughness with this group that will serve them well in both league and tournament play.
"Nobody's really scared of anything, which is great," says Boburka. "That's the mindset I want these girls to have. Let's just go be fearless…Let's just go play golf and see what happens at the end of the day."
The Lancers get their season started this week with home-and-home matches against Canyon at Black Gold Golf Club (August 27) and Anaheim Hills Golf Club (August 29). Trinity League play begins September 17 when OLu visits JSerra. The team has their sights set high and both the skill and mindset to achieve their goals.
"We're excited to see this collective group go out on the course and compete together as a team," says Boburka. "That's the part that I'm looking forward to is to see how they bond and see how they collectively work toward the goal of taking first place in league and continuing that process through the CIF playoff run…It should be a really good year."
