What is an athletic trainer?
Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules and regulations. As a part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
What healthcare professional can complete my Preparticipation Physical Exam (PPE)?
All athletes must obtain medical clearance before trying out or participating in the Orange Lutheran High School athletics program. A sports physical, performed by a licensed medical professional (MD or DO), is required. The doctor’s evaluation must include their office stamp, signature, and the date of the exam.
What should I do if my student-athlete is injured and an athletic trainer is not accessible?
If it is an emergency call 9-1-1 or transport them to the nearest emergency room or urgent care for an evaluation. If it is a non-emergent injury, the athlete can see a member of the Sports Medicine staff for evaluation and/or treatment.
Do I need to schedule an appointment for treatment or evaluations with the Sports Medicine staff?
No, appointments are not necessary, however the AT room should only be accessed during free periods, APE class, lunch, and after school hours. Academic periods and Daily Gathering are not acceptable times.
Can I do rehabilitation for my injury in the athletic training room?
Yes, standard rehabs/treatments can be implemented by the athletic training staff. Post surgical and more extensive rehabs should be coordinated with physical therapists. If you need help finding a local physical therapy clinic in your area we would be happy to help. The athletic training room can be accessed during free periods, APE class, lunch, and after school hours. Academic periods and Daily Gathering are not acceptable times. Talk to the athletic trainers about a preferred time to do your rehab.
What do I wear in the athletic training room?
Follow team and school dress code yet, wear clothing that allows the athletic trainers to access the injured area if possible. For example, if you injured your knee wear shorts or pants that can be pulled up above the knee. In general, modest clothing should be worn in the athletic training room at all times, as well as ice in ice baths.
How do I get cleared to participate in athletics?

What should I do if I suspect my student-athlete may have sustained a head injury?
If your student-athlete sustains a head injury and
an athletic trainer is not present, for an emergency dial 9-1-1 or take them to their primary care physician or Emergency Room for evaluation. If an AT is on site, please have them consult the AT staff for evaluation and further recommendations. Per CA state law and CIF bylaws, all student-athletes suspected of a concussion must be evaluated by a Medical Doctor (MD) before returning to participation. If a concussion is diagnosed by the physician, a graduated return to play lead by the AT staff is required before returning to full participation. Additionally, student-athletes can not return within a minimum of 7 days prior to the injury date.
