Andrew Sanchez `25 - Cross Country Athlete Profile

Orange Lutheran senior Andrew Sanchez never anticipated that distance running would become part of his high school journey. What began as an effort to add more exercise to his routine led him to OLu's cross country program, where he discovered a community that has made a lasting impact on his life.

"It was a new experience for me," says Sanchez. "I really like the coach because she motivates me, and I have really supportive teammates too. And then it's just really good exercise."

As a four-year runner and senior leader, Sanchez not only leads daily stretching and warmups but also takes time to mentor younger teammates who are new to the sport.

"Andrew is the true definition of dedication and grit and what high school athletics are all about," says OLu cross country head coach Kristen Goossens. "He has been such a pleasure to coach and such an inspiration to all his teammates these past four years."

Learning to find his rhythm as a runner was a challenge for Sanchez at first, but his commitment to continual improvement has kept him focused and motivated. Although he didn't expect to become a student athlete, he is proud to have worn the Lancer uniform and competed for OLu.

Sanchez also credits his faith for playing a role in his commitment to cross country and his growth in the sport.

"I feel my faith has played a pretty big role in running," says Sanchez. "I usually pray before meets and important races. I feel it's helped me stay committed with the sport for four years."

As he prepares for his final race for OLu at Trinity League Finals on October 31, Sanchez appreciates his teammates and coaches who have supported him every step of the way.

"It means a lot because I get a lot of support from my coaches and teammates," says Sanchez. "It's just been a really good experience all four of my years."

After graduation, Sanchez hopes to study English in college and continue running recreationally as a way to stay active and connected to the sport.

He credits Goossens for encouraging him to stick with running and for helping him grow both as an athlete and as a person. And he is grateful for his parents, who encouraged and motivated him as he pursued something new.

"They've also helped me stay committed to cross country, and they've always been supportive of me and been at every meet," says Sanchez of his parents.

Beyond athletics, Sanchez reflects on his time at OLu with appreciation for the Lancer community that has shaped his growth both on and off the course.

"I've definitely had very good experience," says Sanchez of his time at OLu. "I've met a lot of great people and great teachers, and I learned a lot about God. It's something I'll never forget."
