Champions again!! The OLu girls water polo team beat Mater Dei 12-4 on Saturday to win the CIF Open Division championship for the 2nd straight season.
It was a slow start as the Lancers fell into a 2-0 hole. But they stormed back quickly, scoring 8 of the following nine goals to take an 8-3 lead at the break. They went 4 for 5 in the first half with a six-on-5 advantage.
That momentum carried into the 2nd half as the Lancers led 9-4 after three and finished with an 8-goal advantage, 12-4. OLu went 6 for eight on the six-on-5 advantage.
Jailynn Robinson led OLu with five goals;
Kate Sloman had four, and
Sofia Umeda had two.
Kyla Pranjaya defended the cage with seven saves.
The title is the 3rd in program history and the 38th overall CIF Championship in school history. The Lancers are now 28-0 overall and will compete for a perfect season this week in the CIF State Regionals. The opener is Tuesday, February 20, with the semifinals on February 23 and the finals on February 24.
