In a game that would be worthy of instant classic status, the OLu softball team defeated the #2 seeded Villa Park Spartans 2-1 in the 2nd round of the CIF playoffs.
The pitching duel of Brianne Weiss and Sydney Somerndike lived up to the hype, with neither giving up a run until the 9th inning. That is when the Spartans struck with an RBI single to score the first run of the game and take a 1-0 lead.
Facing elimination, reigning Trinity League MVP Kiki Estrada delivered. On the inning's first pitch, she took Somerndike deep to tie the game. The game remained that way into the bottom of the 10th when freshman sensation Kai Minor came to bat and ripped a ball deep into the left-field gap. On the play at 3rd, the ball spun away, and she scored to give the Lancers the win 2-1.
Weiss finished the game with 12 K’s, earning her 18th win of the year.
The Lancers return to action in the CIF Quarterfinals on Thursday at Foothill vs Gahr at 3:15 pm.
