For the first time in school history, the OLu hockey team booked a ticket to the semifinals of the USA Hockey National Championships with a 3-0 win over Denver East.
OLu entered the game needing a win to advance. Senior Brendan Bosca broke a scoreless tie at the 3:39 mark of the 2nd period to give OLu the lead 1-0.
The turning point of the game happened to start the 3rd period. The Lancers were on a five-on-three penalty kill for the first minute and 50 seconds of the period. Junior goalie Micah Kawai was a wall-making save after save on the kill to preserve the lead.
Two minutes after the penalty kill Kyle Lee extended the lead to 2-0. Matthew Mendez got the assist. Bosca added his 2nd of the game late in the 3rd period.
Kawai picked up his 2nd shutout of the tournament saving all 26 Denver East shots.
The Lancers will play in the semifinals on Sunday against Shattuck St-Mary's (MN) at 1:15 pm PT.
