Orange Lutheran boys basketball is back on the court and ready to make another deep playoff run this winter. This year’s roster has a bit of a different look than last season’s CIF and State Finalists, but the Lancers are looking forward to making some noise in both the Trinity League and Division 1.
“It’s definitely a new look team, but it’s a team that fits within our culture of what we want to do,” says OLu boys basketball head coach Daniel Dunbar. “I think the pieces that did come in from other schools are good ones that are going to fill some needs. The JV kids from last year have done a great job of stepping up, and the returners are continuing both the culture and what we do.”
The Lancers’ key returners from last year’s varsity squad include seniors Mateo Ledon and Chris Magalong.
“Those two really have stepped up as far as taking that leadership role and making sure the new guys and the JV guys are ready to go,” says Dunbar of Ledon and Magalong.
In addition to the returners, sophomores Ethan McCoy and Sayed Magallon have moved up from JV and are ready to see the floor this year. They will be joined by junior transfers Jordan Lee and Elijah Goodrich and senior transfers Preston Lee and Jaden Hubbard.
“We've been doing a lot with the new group to build that team camaraderie and community,” says Dunbar. “I think that's been the biggest thing this offseason is really buying into the school and the community, which is going to help us go on that long playoff run.”
OLu tips off on Monday, November 13, when they face Fullerton in the Sunny Hills Tournament. Trinity League contests begin January 3 when the Lancers play host to Mater Dei. Dunbar says this year’s Trinity League teams have some deep talent, but he likes what he’s seen from the Lancers so far in Fall League play.
“I'm looking forward to putting all the work in now and seeing where we end up,” says Dunbar. “They've been doing a great job of getting themselves prepared and ready for the season. I feel like that work is going to pay off, and I'm looking forward to helping them reach their goals of what they view as success.”
