This is the September 9th edition of the Athletics Minute. Read below for updates as our fall sports seasons continue and for any other important announcements.
The Lancers (2-1) won a tight game on Friday night vs Edison 17-14. The Lancers trailed 7-0 at the end of the first half, but came out inspired in the second half. The Lancers scored on their opening drive of the half on a 4 yard TD run by Ethan Howard. After going down 14-7, OLu answered again with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Logan Gonzalez to Tiger Bachmeier. With 40 seconds remaining in the game junior Ashton Logan hit a game-winning 29-yard field goal to seal the victory. Cooper Vander Hill ran for 174 yards on 23 carries to pace the Lancers offensively. Defensively the Lancers were stout numerous times on 3rd and 1 plays. Senior Jack Baron had 2 red zone interceptions and junior RJ Regan intercepted a hail marry attempt as time expired.

The girls volleyball team (8-7) faced Esperanza on Thursday and fell 3-0. The Lancers jumped into the David Mohs Memorial Tournament on Friday and beat Vista Murrieta 2-1 before dropping their other two pool play games. The Lancers will look to rebound next week when they travel to La Serna and Mission Viejo.

Girls Golf (5-2) continued their strong start to the season winning 2 out of the 3 matches played this week. OLu knocked off El Dorado on Tuesday 224-242 and beat Canyon 210-250 on Thursday. The Lancers were paced in the Canyon match by sophomore Hannah Batcheller (39) and freshman Riley Shin (40). The two matches dropped this season were at the hands of Yorba Linda by a combined 11 strokes. The JV squad also went 2-1 this week to improve to 4-2 overall.

Boys Water Polo
The #4 ranked OLu boys water polo team opened their season in the Santa Barbara Invitational. They lost their first game against Cathedral Catholic 7-6 before bouncing back with a combined 36 goals over the next two games with wins over Dana Hills and Dos Pueblos. They would fall to San Clemente in the consolation bracket championship game 20-13.

Following a first match defeat, the Lancers have reeled off 3 straight wins. This week OLu knocked off Cypress 15-3 and Villa Park 10-8 to improve to 3-1 overall.

The Lancer cross country team opened up their season in the Cool Breeze Invitational in Pasadena, California.
The girls were 9th overall among top-ranked Division 1 programs. They also earned the top-ranked team time amongst CIF-SS Division 4 schools.
For the boys, freshman Tayne Patel won the 9th-grade boys race with a blistering time of 16:28. Senior Garrett Boezinger ran his lifetime PR (personal record) of 15:43 and placed 7 overall in the varsity race.

Senior pitcher, Max Rajcic, helped USA Baseball's 2019 18U National Team earn a silver medal in the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup. Rajcic led team USA with 13.1 innings pitched, only allowing 2 runs and 8 hits to go along with 10 strikeouts.
