The Athletics Minute is a recap of the prior week's action in Lancer varsity sports.
In a wild affair that featured lead changes, late scores, and overtime the Lancers prevailed 41-38 in overtime on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Logan Gonzalez to Desmin Jackson. OLu started this one off with a bang when Gonzalez hit Malik Blackmon for a 61-yard touchdown pass on the 2nd play of the game. Each team traded touchdowns in the first quarter that ended 14 all. OLu then scored 14 unanswered points to take a 28-14 lead midway through the 3rd quarter. But the Spartans battled all the way back eventually scoring to take a 35-28 lead with just under a minute to go in the game.
On the ensuing drive, the Lancers moved the ball 60 yards in 40 seconds culminating in this beauty of a touchdown pass from Gonzalez to Jackson of 17 yards to tie the game. OLu went for 2 and the win and converted but it was wiped out by a holding call. That forced Dieter Kelly to knock down a 28-yard extra point to send it to overtime. In OT Bryce Brown Johnson made a key pass breakup on 3rd and 5 that forced the Spartans to kick a field goal. OLu would win on the next drive on the Gonzalez to Jackson connection.
In the win, Logan Gonzalez accounted for 5 touchdowns (4 passing & 1 rushing) and threw for 348 yards. Pierce Brown and Jackson Weng each 4 catches for over 60 yards receiving. Jackson was once again a workhorse compiling 91 yards rushing and 92 yards receiving. OLu wraps up non-league play this coming week as they travel to Notre Dame Sherman Oaks. The kickoff is set for 7 pm.

After a couple of weeks on the road, the Lancers returned home to the friendly confines of the Ellwein Center for 2 home games. The #1 ranked team in the CIF-SS D3 poll, OLu swept St. Margarets on Tuesday night 3-0. On Thursday, they battled back from a first-set loss to take the next 3 and beat Esperanza 3-1. OLu won both set 2 and set 3 in dramatic fashion 25-23. On the weekend, they traveled to Whittier High School where they took part in the Whitter Cardinal Classic. They won their pool going 2-1 on Friday which put them into the gold bracket on Saturday. After a win in the first game of bracket play against Los Altos they fell in back-to-back games to finish 3-3 on the weekend.
Non-league play is now over the Lancers will get ready to defend their Trinity League title when they travel to Rosary on Tuesday and host Mater Dei on Thursday. You can watch the Mater Dei match on the NFHS Network by clicking HERE.
OLu capped off a 3 match week with a 2-1 record, notching two victories over Marina and posting a tie for their lowest round of the season at Black Gold (209) in the win on Thursday. Mason Egdahl and Stella Fergin led the way for OLu. Egdahl shot a combined +3 over the course of 27 holes this past week, including a -1 round at Meadowlark on Wednesday. Fergin shot a combined +5 posting two scores of 38 and a 37. Alice Zhou shot a 39 on Tuesday, while Hannah Batcheller nabbed her best score of the year a +5 at Meadowlark against Marina. The Lancers are now 4-4 overall as they head into a home and home with Glendora this week.
Boys Water Polo
In a matchup of two top 10 teams in Orange County, the Lancers fell to the high-powered Huntington Beach Oilers 18-11 this past week. Leo Geissman scored 4 goals, while Connor Brough and Caden Lidecis each had 2. Donnie Robertson made 6 saves. Next up is a matchup against Mira Costa on Tuesday and the South Coast Tournament this weekend.

The girls tennis team now stands at 4-2 through 3 weeks of the season. The Lancers knocked off Crean Lutheran on Tuesday 10-8. They fell on Thursday in an epic match against Troy. The match ended tied on sets 9-9 and went to games where Troy edged them by 2, 72-70. The singles players have continued to lead the OLu through the first 3 weeks. The Lancers have 3 more non-league matches remaining before they head into Trinity League play the week of September 20.
The cross country team was off this week. They are gearing up for the Woodbridge Invitational this weekend.
