The Athletics Minute is a recap of the prior week's action in Lancer varsity sports.
Over the course of each season, one athlete from each sport is selected as a profile athlete. This week's profile is a feature on girls volleyball senior Alexis Dennick.

The Lancers fell 55-16 to #1 ranked Mater Dei on Friday at Orange Coast College. Jaylen Lynch had 7 catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns including this BEAUTY in the loss. Defensively the Lancers picked off Monarch's quarterback Elijah Brown 3 times. Malik Blackmon had 2 picks including one in the end zone near the end of the first half. Brendan Hale recorded the other interception. OLu drops to 5-2 and 0-2 in league with the loss. The Lancers will close out their 2021 home slate against St. John Bosco on Friday at Orange Coast College. The kickoff is set for 7 pm.

It was a one-match week for the Lancers volleyball team. OLu traveled to take on the #1 team in the country, the Mater Dei Monarchs. The Lancers jumped on them in the first two sets taking a 2-0 lead. However, Mater Dei responded by taking the final 3 sets and winning the match. The loss drops OLu to 21-8 overall and 3-3 in the league.
The Lancers will finish out the regular season this coming week with home matches against JSerra and Santa Margarita. OLu is currently ranked #3 in the Division 3 CIF poll.
It was a big week for the golf team on the links. On Tuesday, OLu knocked off Mater Dei for the first time in school history with a 184-195 victory. Freshman Mason Egdahl shot a -3 (33) while senior Hannah Batcheller shot a -1 (35), her first career under par round. The 184 score beat the Lancers prior course record of 189. In a rematch on Thursday, OLu fell on the road to Mater Dei 190-197 to split the season series. Sophomore Jayne Sung played phenomenal shooting an even-par round of 36 in defeat. OLu is 10-6 overall and 3-2 in league play.
The girls head into the final week of the regular season with a 3 match schedule ahead. They host Santa Margarita and JSerra before traveling to JSerra on Thursday.

Boys Water Polo
The past week featured 6 matches for the Lancers water polo team including a showdown with fellow Trinity League power Mater Dei. OLu fell 8-7 to Mater Dei moving them 1-1 in league play. On the weekend they traveled to Harvard Westlake to take part in the Elite 12 tournament. The Lancers went 3-2 on the weekend with wins over Santa Barbara, Cathedral Catholic, and a 12-5 win over Oaks Christian to secure 5th place.
OLu is now 13-7 overall and ranked #5 in the Divison 1 CIF poll. They have back-to-back Trinity League contests this week when they play JSerra on Wednesday and St. John Bosco on Thursday.
OLu fell in their only match this past week 12-6 to JSerra. The loss drops the Lancers to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.
OLu is currently ranked #7 in the Division 2 CIF poll. Next up is Rosary and Mater Dei this coming week.

After a long trip up north to Fresno, the boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Clovis Invitational this past Saturday morning.
In the girl's 5k the Lancer girls finished 2nd overall out of 24 teams. Caroline Kargenian ran a team-best 19:56 good for 21st overall. Lolo Landrith was only 3 seconds behind with a 19:59 which put her in 23rd. Amelia Trautman cracked the top 30 and Kira Anderson finished 33rd while Rahni Reed was 35th.
The boy's team finished in the middle of the pack with a 15th place finish. Ethan Pacholl finished 43rd overall to lead the Lancers contingent. Nate Patton was only 8 seconds behind in 47th.
In the polls, the girls check in at #9 while the boys check in at #4. Both groups will compete in the OC Championships this coming weekend at Oak Canyon Park.
The Lancers improved to 2-0 on the regular season with a 4-3 win over Pacific Ridge on Saturday. The Lancers rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the 3rd period to win. Kyle Isenberg broke a 3-3 tie late in the 3rd to seal the win. The goal was his second of the night. Lucas Ananias and Patrick Moore chipped in the other two Lancer's goals.
OLu will play St. Mary’s on Saturday at Anaheim Ice as the regular season rolls on. Faceoff is set for 1 pm.
