The Athletics Minute is a recap of the prior week's action in Lancer varsity sports.
Girls Basketball
The OLu girls basketball team is 7-1 overall after winning the Lady Spartan Classic on Saturday 48-41 over Sunny Hills.
The Lancers opened the Lady Spartan with a 53-28 win over Woodbridge. Sophomore Princess Cassell led all scorers with 17 points. OLu then went on to beat Oxford Academy and Downey consecutively to reach the final.
In the final against a game Sunny Hill team, the Lancers were down 26-12 in the second quarter when they went on a 14-0 run to close out the half. The momentum carried over to the 3rd quarter and the Lancers extended the lead. OLu would finish the game on a 36-15 run to close out the final with a 48-41 win.
The girls home opener is on Tuesday when they take on the Warren Bears at 6 pm.

Boys Basketball
After two early-season tournaments, the Lancers boys basketball team is 6-3 overall. This past week OLu competed in the Coyote Classic at Buena Park HS.
In the opener, the boys took Redondo Union to overtime but fell 79-71. OLu had trailed by 10 at the break before climbing back into the game to force overtime. The Lancers took on Compton in the 2nd game of the Coyote Classic and won 57-50. Seth Brown had 18 points, David Manea 17, and Blake Brewer had 14 in the win.
Next up was La Mirada and OLu fell in their second overtime game of the week 52-49. Brown again led the Lancers with 19 points. Brewer chipped in 9 and Nik Flores had 8. In the finale, OLu played Compton for the second time. Brown’s 24 points helped lead the Lancers to an 84-50 win. Brewer had 18 and Flores 15.

Girls Soccer
The girls soccer team is off to a great start with a 2-0 record over the first week of the season.
In the opener, OLu knocked off Pacifica Christian 3-1. They followed that up with a 3-0 win on the road against Mission Viejo on Thursday. Through two games Tessa Bloom leads the Lancers with 3 goals. Isabella Barret, Isabella Migirdichian, and Emma Gonzalez all have a goal apiece. Amaya Assal had 7 saves in each contest.
The girls are back at it this week with 2 games. The first is Monday at Norco and then they come back to OLu for their home opener on Thursday vs Newport Harbor.
Boys Soccer
The boys soccer team, led by first-year head coach Mike Oseguera, kicked off the season with back-to-back ties this past week. On Wednesday, Ashton Miles scored the lone unassisted goal in a 1-1 tie against Millikan. Back at it on Friday, OLu had their home opener against Valley Christian. Brandon Robinson scored the Lancers goal with an assist from Alex Vazquez as OLu tied again 1-1.
OLu has 4 games this week. They open with San Clemente at home on Wednesday at 3:15 before playing in the Huntington Beach Invitational this weekend.
Girls Water Polo
The girls water polo team opened the 2021-22 campaign with a hard-fought 9-8 win over Los Alamitos on Tuesday night. Senior Anna Pearson had 4 goals while freshman Michelle Urkov added 2. Sophomore Sofia Umeda had 5 assists. Freshman goalie Kyla Pranjaya had 10 saves in the win. Both teams entered the contest on the Division 1 watch list for the playoffs.
On Saturday Pearson powered the Lancers to a 17-11 win over The Bishops with 8 goals. Urkov had 4 more and senior Delaney Palmer had 3. Sophomore goalie Lauren Steele got the start in the cage and made 7 saves. Defensively, Palmer and Pearson each had a team-high 4 steals.
OLu's lone game this week is this Saturday against Laguna Beach.
Wrestling
The wrestling team competed in their 2nd tournament of the year at the Cossarek Classic at Westminster High School this past weekend.
The Lancers had 4 wrestlers medal in the event:
Dominic Lobo - 3rd place
Lance Dunwoody - 3rd place
Dustin Serizawa - 5th place
Joseph Dervartarian - 6th place
In the season-opening tournament, OLu competed at the Costa Mesa Classic. The Lancers finished 12th out 39 teams. The following individuals medaled:

Next up for the Lancers is the Mann Classic at Marina High. For the girls, they will compete in the Tustin Slammin tournament at Tustin High School.
Surf
The surf team is now 6-2 overall after a 104-65 win over Millikan last week. The Lancers finish out the season with 2 meets against Los Alamitos and LB Wilson this coming week.
