The Athletics Minute is a recap of the prior week's action in Lancer varsity sports.
Football
On the 50th anniversary homecoming night, the Lancers defeated Notre Dame Sherman Oaks 37-14 to finish the non-league season 4-1.
OLu started fast. TJ Lateef hit AJ Ia early in the 1st quarter for a 6-yard score to take a 7-0 lead. The Lancers pulled off an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, and Lateef hit Ben Alefaio for a 31-yard touchdown to take a 14-0 lead.
Lateef added another score when he hit Jackson Weng for a 50-yard score on 3rd and four midway through the second to take a 21-7 lead. Following that score, Mason Johnson sacked the Sherman Oaks quarterback in the endzone for a safety giving the Lancers a 23-7 lead into the half.
OLu tacked on two more scores in the 2nd half, including a 3-yard touchdown run by Gabe Morin, and OLu went on to win 37-14.
The Lancers now have a bye week before opening Trinity League play against Santa Margarita on Friday, September 30, at Orange Coast College.
Girls Volleyball
The girls volleyball team is 16-6 overall and 1-1 in league after splitting their opening two matches of Trinity League this past week.
The Lancers fell on the road 3-1 to Santa Margarita but turned around and beat Rosary 3-0 on Thursday.
Next week, OLu plays road matches at Mater Dei and St. Margaret’s.
Girls Golf
The girls golf team finished the non-league season with three wins this past week to improve to 11-0.
OLu beat Canyon twice and Marina once during the week. The Lancers shot a 183 in Tuesday’s win over Canyon.
Trinity League play starts for the girls on Tuesday against JSerra at Black Gold.
Hockey
On the ice, the Lancers opened their 2022-23 campaign with a 3-2 win over Damien last Saturday. Ethan Kuehn, Kyle Lee, and Matthew Mendez scored goals in the team's victory. OLu outshot Damien 42-27, and Carson Fowler made 25 saves to get the win.
OLu is off until September 24, when they play Pacific Ridge.
Boys Water Polo
In the pool, the Lancers are 2-4 overall after splitting their two matches this week. The Lancers opened the week with a 16-9 win over Mira Costa.
On Thursday, they opened the South Coast Tournament against Palos Verdes and fell in overtime 11-10. The tournament continues on Friday and Saturday.
Girls Tennis
On the tennis court, the girl tennis team finished the non-league play with a 4-4 record.
The Lancers won 17-1 over Esperanza on Tuesday before dropping a tight match to Cypress on Thursday.
Trinity League play begins on Thursday against Santa Margarita.
Cross Country
The cross-country team took part in the prestigious Woodbridge Invitational on Thursday night.
The team finished 7th overall out of 23 schools on the girls side.
