Athlete Profiles
Throughout each season, one athlete from each sport is selected as a profile athlete. This week’s profile features senior girls golfer Stella Fergin.
Football
The #9 ranked Lancer football team traveled to Bellflower Friday night to take on #2 Bosco. The Lancers came into the contest with a 6-2 record and a 2-1 league mark.
The Braves jumped out to an early 21-0 lead, but the Lancers struck back late in the first half on a TJ Latteef touchdown pass to Khanrad Hernandez to cut the lead to 14 at the break.
In the second half, it was all Braves, as they scored 27 unanswered points. The Lancers fell 48-7.
OLu will wrap up the 2022 regular season on senior night against JSerra on Friday, October 28. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm at Orange Coast College.
Girls Volleyball
The OLu girls volleyball team opened the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs on Thursday night at the same location where last year's season ended, Etiwanda High School. This time, the outcome was different.
The Lancers jumped on top of the Eagles, winning the first two sets 25-20 and 25-19. However, Etiwanda responded to tie it up at two a piece. In the 5th, OLu led the whole way. They jumped out to a 4-1 lead, continued to lead 9-6, and finished it off 15-7. The Lancers scored 6 of the match's final 7 points.
Paige Buzzerio, Kenzie Houston, and Lily Underwood each had three aces on the night. On the outside, Londyn Giles had 17 kills, while Buzzerio had 26. Underwood had nine assists per/game, and Jaedyn Houston was a rock with 20 digs.
OLu will play at #2-seeded Vista Murrieta on Saturday, October 22, at noon. The game will be streamed on the NFHS Network.
Girls Golf
On Monday and Tuesday, 8 Lancers participated in the two-day Trinity League Individual Finals held at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills.
The top 8 golfers from the group of 40 would go on to represent the Trinity League at CIF Individuals. For the second straight season, Alexia and Mason Egdahl advanced with their combined score over the two days. Mason finished 5th, while Alexia finished 8th. The CIF Individual tournament is on Tuesday, October 25, at Los Serranos.
Three other Lancers advanced to the second day of the competition. Riley Shin finished 9th, Stella Fergin finished 12th, and Alice Zhou finished 13th. All of those places were good enough for a second-team All-League spot.
The girls golf team will also compete in the Division 1 CIF Team competition on Monday, October 31, at the Huntington Club.
Hockey
On the ice, the Lancers moved to 6-3 overall with a 4-2 win over St. John Bosco on Friday night.
Tied 2-2 after two periods, Jordan Tandy broke the tie with his 2nd of the season. Troy Skeffinton added the insurance goal. Logan Baum (5) and Brendan Bosca (3) were the other two goal-scorers. Caleb Martinez was credited with the win in net.
OLu will play Cathedral next Saturday at the Great Park.
Boys Water Polo
In the pool, the boys water polo team improved to 3-1 in Trinity League play with a 33-6 win over St. John Bosco.
They kept the winning going on their trip up North to the Memorial Tournament. On Thursday, they knocked off Menlo High School 18-7. In game one of the Memorial Tournament at Valley Christian High School, the Lancers won 16-9 over Archie Williams. The second game pitted two top 15 teams in the CIF D1 poll as the Lancers defeated Foothill in the quarterfinals 19-11.
OLu will play in the semifinals of the Memorial Tournament on Saturday at 12:30 against Bishops.
The CIF-SS polls put the Lancers at #12 in Division 1.
Girls Tennis
On the tennis court, the Lancers fell to Mater Dei in their lone match of the week. They currently sit at 6-9 overall with one regular season match remaining against JSerra.
On Wednesday, they open Trinity League Finals at JSerra.
Cross Country
OLu was back on the course Friday afternoon in the Mt. Sac Invitational. It was the second time the Lancers competed at Mt. Sac this season.
For the girls Caroline Kargenian finished 3rd out of 128 runners with a time of 19:45. Sarabella Starkey ran 21:20, good for 15th. Ashley Miller finished 24th with a time of 22:07.
On the boys side, the team finished 4th overall in the D4 Varsity race out of 22 placing teams. Individually the results were:
- Joseph O’Donnell - 16:17 (3rd overall)
- Hank Reynoso - 16:42 (8th overall)
- Ronan Santaniello - 17:36 (26th overall)
- Josh Wonderlick - 18:22 (49th overall)
- Cameron Kruger - 18:36 (65th)
- Joel Borton - 19:00 (71st)
The race had 165 participants. Next up for the group is Trinity League Finals on Friday, October 28, at Huntington Beach Central Park.
Surf
Down at the beach, the Lancers surf team went 1-1 this past week. They lost to Long Beach Wilson 88-80 but beat Long Beach Millikan 89-76 to split the week. They are 2-2 overall, with one competition next week against Los Alamitos.
