The Athletics Minute is a recap of the prior week's action in Lancer varsity sports.
Cross Country
On a windy Saturday morning, the girls cross country team competed in the CIF Finals at Mt. Sac. The division 4 group had 16 teams in the race, with seven qualifying for the state meet.
The girls finished 15th in a very deep division. Individually, OLu had six girls run on Saturday with the following times:
- Caroline Kargenian - 19:28
- Sarabella Stakely - 20:14
- Ashley Miller - 21:26
- Amber Larsen - 21:55
- Jessica VandenBerg - 22:04
- Carisa Moll - 22:29
The Lancer's season wrapped up with their 3rd consecutive CIF Finals berth.
Boys Water Polo
Coming off the program's second-ever CIF Title last Saturday against Foothill, the Lancers were back in action in the Division 1 SoCal Regionals on Tuesday against Harvard Westlake.
OLu fell on the road 16-9. The Lancers finished the season with a 20-11 record.
Hockey
The Lancer hockey team is on a roll.
OLu beat Bosco 4-2 on Friday night to get to 30 points on the season. Tied 2-2 going to the 3rd, Logan Baum broke the tie with his 2nd goal of the game. Aerick Bacon added the insurance goal with less than 5 minutes remaining. Carson Fowler got the win in goal, saving 23 shots.
The Lancers have won 6 of their last eight games.
Boys Basketball
On the court, the boys basketball team opened up the 2022 season at the Rumble for Rosecrans. And what a start it has been.
In the tournament's first game, the Lancers beat Arlington 88-52. They followed that up with a 60-47 win against Woodbridge on Tuesday. In their third game in 3 days, they beat a strong Damien squad 63-51, using an 18-6 3rd quarter blitz to pull away for good.
The semifinals pitted the Lancers against Roosevelt. OLu led by one at the half, but Roosevelt would pull away in the 3rd, going on to win 74-65. The tournament will wrap up on Saturday night in the 3rd place game.

Girls Basketball
To open their defense of last year's CIF Title, the girls basketball team opened up their season in the Oxford Academy Patriot Tournament.
The Lancers opened with a win over Los Amigos. Four Lancers scored in double figures, with Madi Bogan leading the way with 14. In the second game, Bogan continued her scoring ways, notching 16 points, while Shea Joko and Princess Cassell each had 11 in a 66-24 victory over California High School.
The semifinals featured OLu against San Clemente, and it was a tight battle from the start. OLu led by three at halftime and was able to hold on for a 58-54 win to advance to the championship game against Fairmont Prep. Taliyah McFerson led OLu with 18 points, while Sheridan Kennedy had eight rebounds.
The Lancers will play for the title on Saturday night at 7:30 pm.
Surf
On Tuesday, the OLu surf team knocked off Mater Dei for the second time this season with a 105-58 win. The Lancers have two meets left before the league finals in January.
Baseball
Lancer baseball head coach Eric Borba and his son Casey Borba are coming home as gold medalists!
Eric, who was a member of the USA U18 World Cup coaching staff, and Casey, who was a member of the team, helped Team USA go a perfect 8-0 in the tournament and beat Panama in the gold medal game on Sunday 11-1 to win. Casey was named to the All-Tournament Team for his performance over the eight games in La Paz.
