The Athletics Minute is a recap of the prior week's action in Lancer varsity sports.
Athlete Profiles
Throughout each season, one athlete from each sport is selected as a profile athlete. Over Christmas break, we profiled senior girls soccer player Morgan Goehring and junior surfer Andrew Urian.
Boys Basketball
For the 2nd time in school history, the boys basketball team defeated Mater Dei on Wednesday night 80-72. The Lancers rallied from a 3rd quarter deficit to overtake the Monarchs and go on to victory.
On Friday, they fell to Bosco in a challenging road game 62-54.
The Lancers are currently 12-7 overall and 2-2 in league play. They are ranked #9 in the CIF-SS Division 2 poll.
Girls Basketball
The girls basketball team is currently 14-5 and 1-2 in league play, with three weeks remaining in the regular season. OLu beat Santa Margarita to open league play over Christmas Break 61-36. They also finished 5th in the Arizona Tournament of Champions tournament in late December, going 3-1.
The Lancers are ranked 14th in the CIF-SS D1 poll and are in the top 5 in Orange County, as published by OC Varsity.
Hockey
On the ice, the Lancers remain tied for 1st in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League with 36 points. They are currently 12-7 with two more games remaining in the regular season.
Girls Water Polo
The girls water polo team is currently undefeated after a stellar showing over Christmas Break in the Holiday Cup. The Lancers went 4-0 and knocked off San Marcos to take home the trophy.
They are also 2-0 in league play, with wins over Rosary and Santa Margarita. This weekend they traveled to Santa Barbara for their annual Tournament of Champions and are the #1 seed. They won both games to open the tournament and are in the semifinals against Laguna Beach on Saturday.
The Lancers are currently #1 in the CIF-SS Poll and #1 in Orange County, as published by the OC Register.
Girls Soccer
Through 13 games, the girls soccer team is 8-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in league play. Over the past week, they started league play with a win over Rosary, a tie to Mater Dei, and a loss to Santa Margarita.
The girls have five games left in the regular season as they look to secure a 2nd straight CIF playoff berth.
Boys Soccer
On the pitch, the boys soccer team is off to their best start in years with a 9-4-1 record and are 2-2 in league.
Over break, they went 2-1 in the SoCal College Showcase with wins over Bellarmine and Loyola. They won their first league match of the season with a 1-0 win over Santa Margarita thanks in part to a first-half goal by Brandon Laytin. They picked up their second league win on Friday afternoon with a 3-2 triumph over St. John Bosco. Jimu Lee and Ethan Phillips each scored, while Ayden Santana picked up 7 saves.
OLu is currently ranked #2 in the CIF-SS Division 4 poll.
Wrestling
Over Christmas break, the OLu wrestling team participated in the annual Blackwatch tournament at Upland high school. OLu finished 6th out of 58 teams.

OLu competes in the Five Counties tournament at Fountain Valley High School this weekend.
Surf
The Lancer surf team wrapped up the season with the League Finals meet on Thursday, January 12.
OLu was well represented on the podium with the following placing:
