The Athletics Minute is a recap of the prior week's action in Lancer varsity sports.
Boys Basketball
The boys basketball team is off to a flying start with a 6-1 record through 7 games. After a 4-1 performance at the Rumble for Rosecrans, the Lancers have won three straight games in the Diablo Inferno Tourney at Mission Viejo.
To open the tourney, the Lancers defeated San Juan Hills 84-73. Cannon Potter netted 22 points, including three from beyond the arc, and Andrew Nagy provided 17.
In the second game, OLu knocked off Kingsman (AZ) 100-30 behind 23 from Nagy. Carter Wade had 7 points off the bench.
The semifinals pitted the Lancers against Carlsbad on Friday night. Five Lancers scored in double figures, led by Nagy with 22 in a 76-65 victory. The Lancers are in the finals of the Diablo Inferno against Fairmont Prep at 5:30 pm.
Girls Basketball
Coming off a 1st place finish at the Oxford Academy Tournament to open the year, the Lancers were back on the court against Beckman on Thursday evening.
OLu downed the Patriots 71-29. Madi Bogan scored 16 points, Princess Cassell scored 12, Taliyah McFerson netted 11, and Shea Joko scored 8.
The Lancers are 7-1 overall heading into next week's Troy Tournament.
Hockey
OLu was off this past week. They are currently 10-6 overall with 30 points which is good for 1st place in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League. They take on JSerra on Saturday at 2 pm.
Girls Water Polo
The girls water polo team is off to a flying start in the pool; notching wins in their first two contests to open 2-0.
In the opener, the Lancers dispatched Los Alamitos 12-6. The win marked the first for former Olympian and current girls water polo head coach Brenda Villa as a Lancer.
Thursday, they traveled to San Diego to take on Bishops and squeaked out a 12-11 win. Senior Sara Naulty had 6 goals, freshman Allison Cohen had 5, and sophomore Michelle Urkov had 1. In net, Lauren Steele made 8 saves. Defensively, Bella Calderon led OLu with 5 steals.
Girls Soccer
Coming off a deep playoff run, the Lancers opened the season this past week with two wins.
On Tuesday, OLu downed Lakewood 6-0. Bella Barrett and Sophia Tagge had two goals a piece. Nina Hernandez and Shelby Perez each had a goal.
Thursday was a tight game against Northwood that saw Sophia Tagge breaking the 0-0 tie midway through the second half to win 1-0.
The Lancers are back in action next week with two games.
Boys Soccer
The boys soccer team gets started next week with a game against San Clemente on Monday afternoon.
Wrestling
Last Saturday, the Lancer wrestling team made history, capturing their first-ever tournament victory at the Lancer Open. OLu beat 33 teams to capture the title.
OLu will compete in the Cossarek Tournament at Westminster High School this weekend.
Individually, Lance Dunwoody is ranked 35th in the state, and Joseph Devertarian is ranked 32nd.
Surf
The Lancers surf team has won 2 in a row after beating Millikan 89-75 this past week. OLu is 4-5 with one meet left. The League Championships are currently slated for January 12.
