The Athletics Minute is a recap of the prior week's action in Lancer varsity sports.
Boys Water Polo
On Monday, the All-CIF teams were announced for boys water polo. The Lancers were well-represented after winning the program's second CIF Title. Head Coach Jacob Moore was named Coach of the Year, and senior Jon Carcarey was named Player of the Year. See the full list.
Boys Basketball
On the court, the boys basketball sits at 7-2 through 9 games. The Lancers have competed in the Rumble for Rosecrans and the Diablo Inferno, coming in 3rd and 2nd, respectively. Next up is The Classic at Damien after Christmas.
OLu is currently ranked #3 in the Division 2AA CIF poll. The OC Register has the Lancers checking in at #6 in Orange County.
Girls Basketball
The girls basketball team headed into the Troy Tournament this week.
The opening game pitted the Lancers versus the San Clemente, the 2nd meeting between the teams. OLu came out victorious 62-50, led by 17 points from Princess Cassell and 11 points apiece by Shea Joko and Kelly Garrity.
In game 2, OLu locked down Oak Park defensively in a 45-21 win to move on to the semifinals.
OLu fell in the semifinals to nationally ranked Etiwanda 80-40. They will finish out the tournament on Saturday at 4:30 pm.
OLu is currently 8-2 on the young season and ranked 11th in the CIF Division 1 poll and #3 in Orange County by the OC Register.
Hockey
On the ice, the Lancers are 10-7 overall, with five games remaining in the regular season. OLu sits in 2nd in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League standings with 30 points. They are on the ice on Saturday against St. Mary’s at 2:10 pm before a month break over Christmas.
Girls Water Polo
In the most recent poll by the OC Register, the girls water polo team checked in at #2 after starting 3-0 to open the season.
OLu was in the pool once this week against Martin Luther King, a 14-6 win. Offensively, Allison Cohen led the way with six goals. Five Lancers had two assists. Bella Calderon did the work on defense with six steals, and Kyla Pranajaya had 14 saves.
On Saturday afternoon, the Lancers will take on the OC Register’s #1 team Laguna Beach in an early-season showdown. The game will take place at 3 pm at Corona del Mar.
Girls Soccer
The girls soccer team will take a 3-1 record into next week after going 1-1 this past week.
OLu scored five on Tuesday in a 5-1 win over Pacifica Christian. They fell for the first time on Thursday, 4-3, to Newport Harbor.
They will take on El Dorado and Tesoro next week.
Boys Soccer
It’s been a fantastic start to the season for the boys soccer program.
Following an opening night, 0-0 tie against San Clemente, the Lancers rolled off two wins to open the Huntington Beach All Turf Tournament. Behind Hayden Snyder’s two goals, OLu beat Trabuco Hills 3-0. Gaven Shin added the other goal, and Xavier Alcantar had two assists. Ayden Santana and Christian Garcia combined for the shutout.
On Friday, the Lancers bested La Habra 2-0 with goals by George Choura and Brandon Laytin.
The final game of pool play is against Santa Ana on Saturday.
Wrestling
Last weekend the Lancers competed in the Cossarek Classic at Westminster High School. OLu finished 9th out of 38 teams competing.
Individually, the following placed:

- Jonathan Otsuchi: 4th
- Peter Thompson: 4th
- Joseph Dervartanian: 6th
The boys varsity squad is off until Friday, December 16. The girls varsity squad competes in the Lady Monarch Invitational on Saturday morning.
Surf
The surf team wrapped up the regular season 4-6 following a close defeat to Los Alamitos in the final regular season meet of the season. OLu will compete in the league finals meet on Thursday, January 12.
