As the Orange Lutheran boys tennis season gets its start this week, the Lancers are looking for another strong showing in both the Trinity League and CIF playoffs.
Last season wrapped up with a 3rd place league finish and a CIF-SS Division 3 appearance, where OLu made it to the semi-final match before falling to Ventura High School. The Lancers’ performance over recent years has solidified them as a top contender in their division.
“Based on our record from the last two seasons, we’re coming in as one of the top teams in Division 3,” says OLu boys tennis head coach, Flavio Rueda.
The 2019 squad is a mix of veterans and newcomers, including some strong freshmen and senior players in both singles and doubles. Singles player Matias Crescitelli, a key component to last year’s playoff run, is looking to finish his senior season on a high note and will be helping lead the younger players as they prepare to compete.
To start the season, the Lancers will face several Division 1 and Division 2 opponents, matchups that Rueda feels are crucial in helping the team prepare for the competition level they will face in the Trinity League.
“Our goal is to see some success against those strong schools, gain experience and hopefully improve our ranking,” says Rueda.
In his fourth season with OLu boys tennis, Rueda and his coaching staff have been working to grow the program, developing players of all levels to compete on the court. The work the student athletes have invested is beginning to pay off.
“I think we have a strong season ahead,” says Rueda, “and we’re looking forward to it.”by Jenelyn Cunningham Russo ‘88
